Regular Quota Scholarships

CNPq / CAPES / FAPERJ scholarships may be granted to regular full-time students with exclusive commitment to the program’s activities.

The available scholarships are granted to students according to the Program’s own criteria (score in the selection examination, performance during the program, etc.). PEB’s CNPq/CAPES scholarship quota includes approximately 40 scholarships (25 for Master’s degrees, 15 for Doctorates). The maximum duration of scholarships is 24 months for Master’s degrees and 48 months for Doctorate programs. After completing at least one half of the programme, the two best students in each class (considering CVs, scores in PEB’s courses, etc.) are offered special FAPERJ scholarships.

Funding Agencies’ Requirements

  • Exclusive commitment to the program’s activities.
  • Fixed residence in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro.
  • Students in employment relationships may take advantage of a scholarship provided that their employer is not located in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan region and that they prove they are away from professional activities and committed exclusively to the program. If a student’s employer is located in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan region, the student may take advantage of a scholarship if they are released on a leave without pay for the duration of the scholarship.
  • Not being retired.
  • Not receiving any other grants or scholarships from Brazilian or international agencies.
  • Not having received the full duration of a scholarship for the same degree type (Master’s or Doctorate) from any other Brazilian agency.
  • The availability of scholarships for new students accepted during a term depends on the number of scholarships released by students completing their programs and on the CNPq/CAPES scholarship quota, which is adjusted by these agencies yearly.

Scholarships for Foreigners

Candidates from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and Oceania are eligible for CAPES/CNPq’s Graduate Students Program Agreement (Programa de Estudantes Convênio de Pós-Graduação - PEC/PG). The instruction manual and public notice can be found at PEC/PG webpage.

Candidates from countries participating in agreements are also allowed to apply for regular quote scholarships, provided that they hold a valid Brazilian visa. However, such candidates will only compete under the same conditions as others if they prove they applied for special program scholarships during the year in which they applied for the graduate program.
